The use of metal oxide nanoparticles for functional thin films is highly attractive, as the nanoparticles can be applied at low temperatures to achieve functional properties without the need of a calcination treatment, thus also being applicable to polymer-based substrates. However, to achieve acceptable performance a number of aspects need to be taken into consideration. Firstly, the nanoparticles need to be tailored in terms of their size, phase and crystallinity. Secondly, their processing must be established and the interactions between the particles be controlled to avoid unwanted agglomeration and achieve good homogeneity of the films. Thirdly, post-treatment processing of the films must be optimized both with respect to substrate and particle functionality requirements. In the presentation, it is shown how chemical approaches can serve to obtain metal oxide nanoparticles with tailored properties and subsequently realize functional thin films in a number of application fields (electronics, photocatalysis).
